Harrigan Geography

Harrigan GeographyWhere do Harrigans live at the beginning of the 21st century? With the various internet directories and information gained from various sources, we can get a rough idea of our numbers and where they occur.
There are probably around 3500 Harrigan households in the world. Most of these occur in the United States, and most states are represented. Not all these Harrigans are related, but many are. There are probably around 500 households in Canada. In New Brunswick where our Harrigans arrived from County Cork, Ireland, there are probably around 30. Ireland (Eire) has probably just a few more households than New Brunswick; Harrigan is not a common surname in Ireland in modern times. In all of Great Britain there may be close to 700 households. The island of Anguilla is home to many families of Harrigans. There are more than 250 households in Australia, but that's about it for Harrigan gatherings.

The Harrigan Rocks which are pictured on Joe King's book, Ireland to North America, are located in County Cork. Drop me a line if you want to know where.

Iceberg Photo taken near Cape Harrigan, Labrador Posted by HelloA breathtaking iceberg off Cape Harrigan (Davis Inlet), Labrador, in July dwarfs CCGS Matthew. The ship was in the area to run survey lines for a new shipping channel into Cape Harrigan. Fergus Francey, First Officer, caught this magnificent scene on film one evening from the Matthew's fast rescue craft several miles from the offshore end of the survey corridor. This beauty was one of many icebergs the ship encountered, which made for challenging line running, Fergus reports.

Harrigan Hill is a rocky hill in the NW part of Mitchell Peninsula, just E of Pidgeon Island of the Windmill Islands. First mapped from air photos taken by USN OpHjp, 1946-47. Named by US-ACAN for Edward C. Harrigan, meteorologist at Wilkes Station in 1961.

Don't leave Harrigan Lake without first going for a hike along the Valley River Trail. Go for a hike on the Holstrum Spur Trail. Climbing up to the top of Harrington Hills is great exercise. Prairie Creek is very near and is always a pleasure to visit. Other nearby water includes Valley River. There are great places to discover along the Buttonbox Trail. Nett Lake Indian Reservation is a great place. (Thanks to Bob Harrigan)

There is a Harrigan Lake in Saint John, New Brunswick. And a Harrigan Cove in Nova Scotia. If you hear of any other geographical sites bearing this name, please let me know.
